As adults voted for candidates in Tuesday’s elections, Illinois schoolchildren were tending to other serious business--casting ballots for their favorite fish.

In an exercise designed to demonstrate the election process, Illinois pupils were given the opportunity to elect a state fish.

The candidate species are the channel catfish, coho salmon, carp, bluegill, largemouth bass and white crappie. Pupils could also write in another candidate.

The voting will be wrapped up on Nov. 15 at schools throughout the state, and the state Board of Elections is to publish the returns in mid-December.
