COLUMBUS — Democratic Gov. Richard Celeste was reelected, thwarting a bid by Republican James A. Rhodes, who had sought to regain his old office for an unprecedented fifth term.
Sen. John Glenn, a Democrat, held his Senate seat for a third term, rebuffing a challenge from Republican Rep. Thomas Kindness.
Celeste, 48, had lost to Rhodes in the 1978 gubernatorial race.
With 99% of the votes counted, Celeste had 1,848,692 votes or 61%, to Rhodes’ 1,202,919 votes or 39%.
Celeste is a former Rhodes Scholar who headed the Peace Corps in the Carter Administration. Rhodes, 77, had won a three-way Republican primary in May.
With 99% of the votes in the Senate race, Glenn had 1,938,728 votes or 62%, to 1,167,145 votes or 38% for Kindness.
