More Americans are enjoying greater affluence, a Commerce Department study found. Americans, on the average, have raised their standard of living about 20% in each decade since 1940, according to the report from the department’s Census Bureau and the Conference Board, a nonprofit business information service. The survey also found that the volume of goods and services consumed by the average American has doubled since 1950.
