ALL THE WORLD’S A FILM

Jean Luc-Godard’s long-rumored (and doubtless, highly non-traditional) “King Lear” for Cannon is coming closer to reality. The French director shot a scene for the film in NYC recently with Woody Allen, who, according to a source familiar with the project, plays a film editor in a film within the film.

And actress Ellen Burstyn told us that she met last week with stage director Peter Sellars, who’s assisting Godard on--and in --the film, to discuss the participation of members of the Actors Studio. Burstyn, artistic director of the Studio, said Godard hopes to shoot most of the film at the Studio’s mid-Manhattan Hq in January.

Burstyn hasn’t read the script but said she understands “Lear” to be “more a study” of Shakespeare’s classic than a filming of the actual play, with characters auditioning for a fictional filming of the play. Actors Studio vet Rod Steiger reportedly is set to play an actor who eventually wins the title role.
