POOR ‘HARVEST’ FOR LATINOS

Share

The article “Late Harvest” by John M. Wilson (Oct. 19), confused me with its mixed message: Wilson criticized the film industry for ignoring the Latino culture here in the U.S., yet praised Robert Redford’s effort, “The Milagro Beanfield War,” in which no Chicanos, with whom the film concerns itself, appear in major roles.

Chick Vennera, the male lead, is Italian-American; the other stars may be Latino, but they are not Chicano. In his article, Wilson laments the under-representation of Chicanos and Chicano culture in the media--so why praise this film?

Fine intentions may exist with those involved in this film, but when will the reality of Latino culture be legitimate, and accepted?
