Venezuelan President Jaime Lusinchi inaugurated the Guri Dam, one of the world’s most powerful hydroelectric plants, completed after 23 years of construction at a cost of $5.2 billion. “This is a great work in every respect, one that all Venezuelans can take pride in,” Lusinchi said before pressing the button to start the plant that will meet about 75% of the country’s electricity needs. Officially known as the Raul Leoni Dam, the plant on the Caroni River, 400 miles southeast of Caracas, has a 10,000-megawatt generating capacity.
