Fourteen cars of a 126-car freight train derailed near Clarkton, N.C., and a methanol tanker burned after the engineer braked in a futile effort to avoid hitting a man on the tracks, authorities said. The man, Barry Wayne Landreth, 28, of Linden, N.C., was killed, but none of the four crewmen on the CSX train were injured, the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department reported. Officials said the chemical car was allowed to burn after nearby residents were evacuated.
