Bone-chilling temperatures and biting winds pushed wind chills far below zero today in the Midwest and Rockies on the tail end of a northern Plains blizzard that claimed at least six lives and left up to 25 inches of snow.

Record cold temperatures for the date were established in at least 10 cities in Washington, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, Michigan and Illinois.

Butte, Mont., was the coldest spot around the nation with a reading of 30 below zero.

The temperature at Goodland, Kan., dropped from 29 to 14 degrees in one hour, and northerly winds of 33 m.p.h. produced wind chills near 30 below.

The blizzard conditions blew into Canada on Sunday, but another snowstorm in the Rockies was close behind. The latest storm was moving in a slightly more southern direction, dumping snow in the central Rockies, middle Missouri Valley and upper Great Lakes.

Houghton, Mich., received three inches of snow this morning, while five inches fell at Mullen, Neb.
