Editorial and business employees of San Francisco’s two major newspapers voted by a 2-1 ratio to ratify a new labor contract negotiated under threat of a strike. Employees of the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, which prints and distributes the newspapers, were the first to vote on the pact. The Newspaper Guild said the contract gives union workers an average raise of about $85 a week over 43 months. Ten unions representing 5,000 workers must approve the proposed settlement with the Newspaper Agency, the San Francisco newspapers and the San Jose Mercury News. Voting will continue through December.
