Today is the last day that the City Council will accept applications for the vacancy created in District 8 by the resignation of Councilman Uvaldo Martinez. Martinez, who pleaded guilty to illegal use of a city-owned credit card, will resign his post today and is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday in Superior Court.

The City Charter requires the council to appoint Martinez’s successor or call an election to fill the seat. The appointee will serve as a caretaker until December, 1987, when a new council member is elected and sworn in. The person appointed to the seat must agree not to be a candidate in next year’s election.

District residents will have two opportunities to address the council before an appointment is announced. The first hearing will be held next Wednesday at 2 p.m. The second hearing will be held the following Monday at 6 p.m. Free parking will be provided for the second meeting at the city garage, adjacent to the concourse. Both meetings will be held at the City Council chambers.
