Riot police dispersed several thousand supporters of the outlawed Solidarity union when they tried to march through Warsaw after a Roman Catholic Mass marking Poland’s independence day. The police blocked streets ahead of the marchers but allowed four of them to continue to Poland’s tomb of the unknown soldier, where they placed a floral wreath. Several marchers were reported detained. The Mass commemorated the 68th anniversary of Poland’s independence in 1918, after 123 years of partition among Russia, Prussia and Austria.
