Iraq Raids Iranian Oil, Power Stations
Iraqi warplanes struck deep into Iran on Wednesday for the second consecutive day, killing up to 25 people, according to Iranian reports.
In Baghdad, a military spokesman said Iraqi jets hit an oil refinery and a power station in the central Iranian city of Esfahan, 210 miles south of Tehran, and an oil field. A later war communique said dozens of planes attacked military camps near the war fronts.
Iran’s national news agency said the raid on Esfahan damaged two industrial units, and Iranian media said that up to 25 people were killed and 30 wounded.
Tehran radio said artillery gunners have started to shell three southern Iraqi areas in retaliation for attacks carried out Tuesday against a petrochemical complex at the Persian Gulf port of Bandar Khomeini and other sites.
The latest flare-up came as a peace committee formed by the 46-member Organization of the Islamic Conference called for a cease-fire and a negotiated end to the six-year-old war.
