The country’s second-largest manufacturer of baby food pleaded innocent today to charges of selling millions of jars of bogus apple juice during a five-year period.

The 470-count indictment, made public at an arraignment in federal court, charged that Beech Nut Nutrition Corp., six individuals and a shipping company conspired to distribute the phony juice from 1978 to 1983. The jars, labeled 100% apple juice, actually contained water, beet sugar, cane sugar syrup, corn syrup, apple flavoring and other ingredients but very little, if any, apple juice, the indictment charged.
