Separatists and pro-French militants in New Caledonia clashed in the coastal town of Thio, and police said a 14-year-old boy was killed and 12 people injured. The fighting broke out after 200 pro-French loyalists held a rally. New Caledonia's population of about 145,000 is divided between the Kanak, or Melanesian, separatists and loyalists of European and Asian ancestry who favor continued French control of the South Pacific island.
