Cuba has agreed to pay $40 million compensation to 3,000 Spaniards whose property in Cuba was nationalized in the 1960s, Spain’s foreign minister said in Havana. Francisco Fernandez Ordonez gave no details of the agreement. He said that Spain would pay the claimants and then give Cuba 15 years to repay. Cuba’s payment would be both in hard currency and in exported products, including tobacco, he said. The compensation accord was worked out while Cuban President Fidel Castro and Spanish Premier Felipe Gonzalez have been holding secret talks at an undisclosed location in Cuba.
