For the first time since the Challenger explosion, astronauts will climb aboard the space shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday for launching tests that will include emergency escape drills. The escape tests, in which astronauts will pretend to be injured after a simulated pre-launch emergency, are the most extensive ever carried out in the shuttle program since the Challenger disaster last January.
