Soviet weightlifter Yuri Zaharevich lifted a total of 990 pounds at the World Weightlifting Championships at Sofia, Bulgaria for a combined world record in the second heavyweight category of 220 pounds and over.

Zaharevich bettered his old record of 442 pounds in the snatch. In the jerk, he lifted 547 pounds to surpass by one pound the former record set in 1983 by fellow Soviet Vyacheslav Klokov.

Zaharevich’s combination lift officially was listed as 987 pounds under tournament rules which specify that new marks must exceed previous records set by other athletes by at least two pounds.
