Mahony and School Clinics

An unarranted intrusion? It would seem to me that Archbishop Mahony is taking a stand that many of the “secular experts” would be well advised to examine.

The issue of human sexuality goes far beyond physical union. It is an issue of emotional intimacy that touches the very core of the person; even to the depths of one’s soul, if I may be permitted to use such a “non-secular” term. The long-range effects of such a union between two persons unable to understand or appreciate the complete self-giving and surrender to one another can have devastating consequences. It is bad enough that meat markets flourish among our young adult communities, but must they be encouraged to exist on a high school level?

The answer to the “tragedy” of teen-age pregnancy is not birth control, for this solution is only as effective as placing a bandage on a severed artery. The answer to this problem lies in teaching all of humanity (not just teen-agers) the dignity of the human person, of which sexuality is a small but vitally important part.
