L.A. Partnership Tries the Postal Route

Share

Thankfully, the L.A. Partnership for the Homeless has come up with a great fund-raising idea.

This past week, about 50,000 homes in the L.A. area received a Thanksgiving greeting card from the Partnership’s board. “Wishing you all the blessings of home and family,” the card reads. Enclosed is an envelope, for contributions to the Partnership, which with the mailing marks its debut to the general public. The Partnership is a new nonprofit organization that coordinates the efforts of businesses, foundations and individuals in assisting the homeless of Los Angeles County--and is funded entirely by contributions.

Kelli Questrom, the wife of Bullock’s chairman Allen Questrom, gets credit for spark-plugging the card idea--and the department store gets credit for underwriting the card and mailing. Hundreds of volunteers pitched in, coordinated by accounting firm Arthur Anderson & Co., to hand address the greetings.

In an age when the city bends low under the burden of black-tie benefits, one can only hope that the response will be a hearty “the check is in the mail.”

POTOMAC FEVER--The temperature might be running a little low these days in D.C., since it seems possible that several major presidential campaigns will be run from locations other than Washington. The covered wagons will soon be heading west to Denver for the Gary Hart headquarters. The Hart people are hoping that they will leave behind long-time Democratic political operative Paul Tully to manage Washington affairs. He served as political director of the Mondale ’84 campaign. But Tully, who is currently heading up the political action committee of Sen. Ted Kennedy, tells friends that he’s made no decision so far. . . . Former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt is planning to coordinate his efforts directly from his home state, insiders say, and is now setting up a Phoenix office for his new employer, the Washington law firm of Steptoe & Johnson. . . . Even Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden, just a short train-ride from D.C., is considering running his major presidential office out of Delaware. Tim Ridley is now the administrative assistant for Biden, and he’s expected to play a major role in the presidential effort.

It benefits the Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Israel’s largest hospital. Honorary chairs are Nancy and Robert Daly, Jane and Terry Semel, Peggy and Tom Pollock, and Betty and Sanford Sigoloff. . . .

The USC Journalism Alumni Assn. presents its distinguished achievement awards to David Broder, Washington Post political reporter and columnist; “ABC World News Tonight” anchor Peter Jennings; and the program “CBS News Sunday Morning” at its 27th annual dinner next Wednesday. Norman Corwin emcees at the Sheraton Premiere Hotel in Universal City. . . .

And special kudos to chef Laurent Quinioux, certainly doing his bit this year for worthy causes. On Dec. 7, at his Seventh Street Bistro, Quinioux hosts a benefit art exhibit and cocktail party for the Exceptional Children’s Foundation. The ECF holds its 40th anniversary banquet Friday, and, turning the tables, honors SHARE (Share Happily and Reap Endlessly).
