55-M.P.H. Speed Limit

O’Neill’s letter emphatically states we should keep the 55-m.p.h. speed limit because “it makes sense.” I would like to suggest that O’Neill make a trip between Reno and Salt Lake City, El Paso to Dallas, etc., etc., etc., at 55 m.p.h. and then see if he would still make the statement that 55 makes sense for all roads.
I won’t disagree that the 55-m.p.h. limit on many roads is justified, but there are always justifiable exceptions to any rule. Therefore, why can’t a little common sense be applied by our Washington bureaucrats to allow for the raising of speed limits on open desolate stretches of highway in the West? If anything, this is what would “make sense” without compromising the safety of motorists using these roads.
