About a third of Americans have never read the Bible or cannot remember the last time they read it, a Gallup Poll found. In addition, many Americans have great trouble identifying major biblical characters and events, the survey said. Although eight in 10 Americans say they are Christians, only four in 10 know that Jesus, according to the New Testament, delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and less than 50% of all adults can name Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as the four writers of the Gospels.
