Turkeys Are the Stuff Holidays Are Made Of

It is best not to think of them as individuals. You’ve seen one turkey, you’ve seen them all. Right?

These feathery fellows will soon be appearing in a supermarket near you, headed for Thanksgiving tables. As you see them here, they are readying themselves for the occasion ahead.

They do that mostly by eating. Avon Waters (right), turkey handler at the Star Milling Co. near Perris, says the gobblers--approaching the end of their short, happy 18-week life--have grown considerably during the fattening-up process.

The hens are close to 20 pounds; the toms commonly approach the 30-pound mark.

Not that it matters. Not that they care. Do they?
