I LED 58 LIVES

Share

For “Three Faces of Eve,” Joanne Woodward played a trio of personalities. “Sybil” found Sally Field tackling 16. In an upcoming TV movie Valerie Bertinelli will go for 58. Well, sort of.

“Only 10 of those personalities were really prevalent, and we’ll concentrate on five or six,” said Bertinelli manager Jack Grossbart. He was explaining that Bertinelli will portray Nancy Gooch, co-author of an upcoming book (“Nightmare”) about her real-life multiple-personality disorders, in a four-hour CBS project. (Bertinelli’s own company is co-producing; a writer is about to be hired.)

Before therapy rescued her, Gooch claims, she had 58 personalities. According to Grossbart, those Bertinelli will play may include twin teen-agers (the boy is a heroin-addicted gang-leader, the girl a prostitute), a young woman with a 166 I.Q. and a talented painter. And, of course, she’ll play Gooch herself, who, said Grossbart, is “very quiet and sweet and personable, with a sense of humor about what she endured.”
