Takeover Madness

I was particularly pleased by an item, headlined “Out of Luck at Gemco,” in Harry Bernstein’s Nov. 5 column. Bernstein pinpointed the madness of the current takeover mania.

Despite what Asher B. Edelman, T. Boone Pickens Jr. and their ilk of takeover artists say, there is no useful purpose served by such carnivorousness.

In fact, there is much that is destructive. To punish hard-working Gemco employees because management of Lucky is incompetent is perverse.

To allow management to stay employed borders on the criminal.

Edelman’s statements about not intending to lay off Gemco employees is small consolation to the affected families. It all seems like a plot to break the union. The new owner, Target, is a commited union buster which will now only pay minimum wages.

I and my family will never shop in Lucky or Target, and I urge other concerned people to take the same pledge.
