Don Jamieson, Ex-Minister in Trudeau’s Cabinet, Dies

Don Jamieson, who held several key cabinet posts in the Liberal governments of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the 1970s, collapsed and died while jogging Wednesday near his home at Swift Current, Canada.

Jamieson, 65, a broadcaster who became a noted orator, began his political career in the 1940s by advocating that Newfoundland join the United States instead of Canada.

He later became a staunch federalist and served successively in Trudeau’s governments as minister of transport, industry, trade and foreign affairs.

From 1983 to 1985, Jamieson was Canada’s ambassador to Britain.

“He was as good a speaker as there was in Canada, in Parliament and on the platform,” said John Turner, now Liberal Party leader. “He was undoubtedly one of the most popular human beings around.”
