Southland Roundup : Last-Minute Touchdown Pass Lifts Sacramento Over Northridge

Freshman quarterback Drew Wyant threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Lin Klinkhammer with 28 seconds remaining Saturday to give Cal State Sacramento the Western Football Conference title with a 21-17 win over Cal State Northridge at Sacramento.

Wyant, making his first start in place of injured starter Phil Hickey, threw to a wide open Klinkhammer in the right corner of the end zone.

The touchdown was set up three plays earlier by a 39-yard pass from Wyant to Mark Young on a third and 16. Northridge safety Dan Coleman appeared to be in position for an easy interception, but he lost sight of the ball and Young came back to make the catch.

Mike Kane led Northridge with 155 yards in 26 carries, including a 39-yard touchdown run. Northridge finished 8-3 overall, 4-2 in the WFC. Sacramento (6-4-1, 5-1) came from behind in all of its conference victories.

St. Mary’s 49, Cal Lutheran 35--Kingsmen quarterback Tom Bonds threw for 434 yards, but Jim Horan threw four touchdown passes to lead the Gaels to a nonconference win at Moraga, Calif.

Horan finished with 13 completions in 20 attempts for 211 yards. Tight end John Braff was the leading Gael receiver with 9 catches for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. Freshman fullback James Javier ran for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 48-yard scoring run that broke a 35-35 tie in the fourth quarter.

Bonds completed 44 of 59 passes with no interceptions but only one touchdown. Joe Monarrez was the leading receiver with 12 receptions for 150 yards, while tailback Cary Grant ran for three touchdowns. The teams combined for 1,076 total yards.

Cal Lutheran finished 3-8, and St. Mary’s finished 5-5.
