SOUTHERN SEASONING

Share

Jason & the Scorchers and the Georgia Satellites hail from Tennessee and Georgia, respectively, but musically they come from pretty much the same place. It’s a place where lean, direct rock songs are flavored with blues and country seasoning, then served with pulverizing rhythmic drive, impassioned vocals and lots of wild gee-tar.

And that’s just on the records. At the Palace Friday, both bands roared through terse sets that made everything sound even harder--and better. In their local debut, the second-billed Satellites immediately conveyed solid chops, as guitarists Dan Baird and Rick Richards locked into rock-solid grooves with fiery fretwork.

The quartet’s drawback? No frontman--in contrast to headliners Jason & the Scorchers, who were every bit as frenetic and inspired, but generated a more focused fury thanks to the anchoring presence of Jason Ringenberg. A very neat band.
