The Rev. Jesse Jackson met with about 30 black cadets at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., a state-supported military academy, to discuss race relations on the campus. It was Jackson’s second visit to the school since a black cadet was harassed last month by five white cadets dressed in white sheets. School officials disciplined the whites by confining them to campus for the rest of the school year, except holidays, and requiring them to march 200 extra hours. Black leaders complained that they should have been expelled, and Jackson accused the academy of trying to cover up serious race problems.
