MUSEUM OFFERS EXHIBIT OF HANDMADE JEWELRY

The Laguna Art Museum’s satellite gallery at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa is presenting a jewelry show today that will feature handmade pieces by eight Orange County jewelry designers.

The jewelers will be on hand from 1 to 5 p.m. to answer questions about their craft and the individual pieces, according to Lee Jones, the gallery’s program coordinator.

The exhibit includes work by Janet Adams of Costa Mesa, Carolyn Albright of Laguna Beach, Vera Viana Asper of Costa Mesa, Barb Schuppe of Laguna Beach, Ilene Sirota of Santa Ana, Kathrine McGlothin of Laguna Beach, Marjorie Alexander of Santa Ana, Grace Songolo of Dana Point and Marsha Archer of San Francisco. On display will be bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants, earrings and “bolero” Texas-style ties made from silver, brass, copper and other metals and incorporating semi-precious stones and leather. Some pieces are made from wood, ivory, coral, clay, rubber and paper, Jones added.

The show is primarily designed to acquaint the public with local artisans and their work, said Jones. Since many of the pieces are for sale, it may also help the gallery take a step toward relieving some of its financial woes. Laguna Art Museum officials say the 2-year-old storefront gallery may close in early January because of high operational costs. The museum’s main facility in Laguna Beach reopened in September after a $1.6-million face lift.
