Socialist Chancellor Franz Vranitzky predicted that it will take six to eight weeks to form a new Austrian government after elections in which small parties on the right and left made strong showings. Both the Socialists and the conservative Austrian People’s Party suffered significant losses in Sunday’s elections for the 183-seat Parliament, emerging with 80 seats and 76 seats, respectively. They are expected to form a “grand coalition” government.
