Israel is increasingly concerned with the growing Palestinian presence in southern Lebanon and with an alliance between the Palestinians and Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas, a senior Israeli intelligence officer told reporters. The officer also said that Abu Nidal’s Palestinian faction was becoming a dominant group jockeying for position in the region. The Palestinians are increasingly using sea routes to bypass Shia Muslim opposition and move weapons into the southern Lebanese area bordering Israel, the officer said.
