Defuse Tensions, Pope Tells Nicaragua Church
Pope John Paul II has urged the Roman Catholic Church in war-torn Nicaragua to strive for national reconciliation.
In a letter sent to the Nicaraguan National Eucharistic Congress and released Monday by the Vatican, the Pope said, “In Nicaragua a ‘civilization of love’ must come strongly forth in a reconciled country, where there is no room for hate, violence or injustice.”
Relations between the church and the leftist Sandinista government in Nicaragua have been particularly tense since the expulsion of a Nicaraguan bishop in July.
