Campaign to Defeat Prop. 65
The series of in-depth articles by Peter King on the Marketing of a Proposition is one of the finest public services ever offered by The Times.
For those of us who read every word of how Proposition 65 was fought, the insights into modern election practices were invaluable.
Should the system by changed? Can television commercials be eliminated as a campaign tool? Can our air waves be used more responsibly?
The issues far outweigh the victory or defeat of individual propositions. The major issue, in my opinion, is to find some way to eliminate or reduce glaring tendencies to make a mockery of our election process.
If our government can forbid tobacco advertising on television for the health of the nation, can not spot commercials that trivialize issues of serious import also be curtailed? (How can anything of substance be said in 30 seconds?)
