Two more chemical spills into the Rhine were reported in West Germany, the fifth and sixth contamination incidents in Western Europe’s main river this month. Authorities said 1,760 pounds of methanol, or wood alcohol, accidentally flowed into the river from the Bayer chemical company’s Leverkusen plant while another Bayer plant, in Krefeld, spilled 110 to 220 pounds of a disinfectant. West German Environment Minister Walter Wallmann reacted by calling for new laws to regulate chemical companies, but he predicted that the industry would resist new regulations.
