The last two of eight people convicted in a plot to smuggle 100 rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition to the Irish Republican Army were sentenced to prison terms. U.S. District Judge A. David Mazzone in Boston sentenced Noel Murphy, 26, of County Cork, Ireland, to nine years, and Cairan Hughes, 24, of Belfast, Northern Ireland, to eight years. They were arrested with six others at an airfield near Boston, where they were loading weapons aboard a jet.
