John McEnroe owes more than $900,000 in back taxes, according to the Internal Revenue Service, but his lawyer has disputed the charge.

Auditors for the IRS said that McEnroe improperly deducted losses, interest expenses and payments in lieu of dividends from his 1982 federal tax returns, a figure totaling $906,291. The deductions in question are from his investment in a New York limited partnership that serves as a broker and dealer in marketable securities.

McEnroe, 27, has filed a petition asking the court to overturn the IRS finding, according to his lawyer, Richard Bronstein, who said the IRS has passed the three-year statute of limitations to file a notice of delinquency. The IRS did not file the papers in U.S. Tax Court until August.
