Health Care

Leonard Kattan’s letter (Nov. 19) about Gov. George Deukmejian’s veto of the bill to provide risk-pool insurance for those who are refused health insurance because of an existing medical condition is further evidence of the need for a national health service.
Gray Panthers have campaigned for a long time for a health service plan that would offer both treatment and preventive services to all citizens, without regard to their ability to pay or their medical condition.
The United States and South Africa are the only industrialized nations that do not provide health plans for their citizens. Our hodgepodge of fee-for-service, health insurance plans with varying coverage, Medicare and Medi-Cal costs us upward of 11% of our gross national product and leaves millions of the “uninsurable” as well as those who cannot afford to pay with no protection whatsoever.
