A 60-year-old Northridge woman was killed when the car in which she was riding crashed into a stalled semi-trailer truck on Interstate 70, Utah Highway Patrol troopers reported.

Troopers identified the victim of the Wednesday accident as Claire Smith. Her husband John, 61, suffered minor cuts and scrapes. He was treated at Castleview Hospital, about 50 miles away, and released.

The couple’s 24-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was not injured in the accident, authorities said.

John Smith was driving on icy Interstate 70, about 30 miles west of Green River, when he lost control, Highway Patrol troopers said.

The car skidded into an 18-wheel rig that had stalled on the side of the highway. Utah state troopers and a tow truck were trying to remove the rig from the highway at the time of the accident.

“The roads were icy and extremely slick, and he was driving too fast for the existing conditions,” a dispatcher said.
