PROUD PAPA

Chong also tipped us that sometime partner Cheech Marin has gotten a “go” from Universal to feature-film “Born in East L.A.,” the title of Marin’s successful video, musically inspired by Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.”

Close, but not quite, a source close to Cheech reports.

“A film inspired by the real-life events that inspired the video (a Chicano mistakenly deported to Mexico) has been developed at Universal and is moving closer to production,” said the source. “No title at this time.”

It’s being referred to at the studio as “Cheech Marin’s barrio project,” probably because of legal issues over the title (no comment on that). No production date set, but there is “a lot of activity getting people together” for a hoped-for shoot early next year. Marin has written a script, would star and exec produce and may direct.
