Share

A forklift operator at a North Hollywood printing company who was one month away from retirement was killed Saturday morning when the forklift he was using tipped over, police said.

Richard Williams, 64, of Los Angeles was shifting bales of paper when a heavy load caused the forklift to pitch forward, Los Angeles Police Lt. John McCrillis said.

Williams got into a second forklift, which he tried to use to right the first one, McCrillis said. “But the second forklift fell over sideways,” he said.

Williams was thrown from the machine, and the second forklift, along with part of the load, fell onto his upper body, Sgt. Will Doiron said. “By the time the Fire Department got there, he was dead,” the sergeant said.

The accident occurred at 7:45 a.m. at Alco Gravure Inc., on the 11000 block of Vanowen Street, Doiron said.
