Divorce Laws

Share

I am currently married, after having been divorced.

My wife was previously married and divorced.

My mother and father each had divorces before they married each other. Their marriage has lasted more than 35 years.

My wife’s parents are divorced.

Our President is the first in history to have been divorced. Yet Ronald Reagan’s Working Group on the Family (Times, Nov. 14) suggests revising liberal divorce laws.

Not one of us is willing to return to a former mate. If my parents had not been free to marry each other and have two more children, I would not exist. My wife and I plan to have children, but certainly not to provide recruits for the armed services.

A return to draconian divorce laws surely cannot create morality or compatibility. It would be a return to hypocrisy and marital misery; a rise in adultery and murder.
