Two jetliners nearly collided with small planes during landing approaches in separate incidents at O’Hare International and Midway airports, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The incidents occurred at opposite ends of Chicago within 29 minutes of each other, FAA spokesman Mort Edelstein said. The commercial planes involved, a United Airlines 727 with 128 passengers, and a Midway Airlines DC-9 with 90 passengers, reported that they came within a few hundred feet of the smaller aircraft. The FAA was investigating.
