Noting an increase in cases of penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, health experts began a two-day meeting at the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta to discuss the issue. In 1984, 4,406 cases of penicillin-resistant gonorrhea were reported to the CDC. That figure rose to 8,914 in 1985. “For the first six months of 1986 we have 6,098 cases reported,” Alula Hadgu of the CDC’s office of statistics said. She predicted about 12,000 cases for the year. Peter Crippen, CDC senior health adviser, said such cases can be fought with more expensive drugs.
