Austrian Chancellor Franz Vranitzky urged his countrymen to acknowledge their nation’s Nazi past and accept their share of responsibility. In a Vienna address to more than 350 veterans, former Nazi death camp inmates and former prisoners of war from 40 nations, Vranitzky said Austria must realize what “we were guilty of in the past.” Vranitzky, an infant when Adolf Hitler made Austria part of the German Reich, said, “We must face our past squarely, accept our share of guilt and responsibility and from that, deduce our standards for our actions in the future.” Kurt Waldheim, accused of hiding a Nazi past, was elected president of Austria in June.
