Lava Flow Menaces More Hawaii Homes

Waist-deep molten rock threatened eight houses Wednesday as it crept away from the main lava flow that has added 56 acres to this island.

Ten homes on the outskirts of this small community have been incinerated in the advance of the 2,000-degree lava flow during the past two weeks. The new breakaway flow was endangering eight homes in the Royal Gardens subdivision.

The main lava flow, which is nearly eight miles long, has been fed from an erupting vent in Kilauea Volcano’s east rift zone, which became visibly active July 18.
