Missile Flies OK, but Warheads Fail

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE —
An unarmed MX ballistic missile successfully flew to a target in the Pacific on Friday, but two of its 10 dummy warheads did not work, Air Force officials said.
“The test flight itself was extremely successful,” said Capt. Ron Joy, spokesman for the ballistic missile office at Norton Air Force Base. “Two RVs (re-entry vehicles, or warheads) did not deploy--No. 9 and 10. We don’t have any known causes of the problem.”
The MX, launched at 8 a.m., flew 4,200 miles to the missile test range at Kwajalein Atoll.
