Future San Diego High-Rises

As of the end of September, San Diego had about 1 million square feet of vacant office space, about three fourths of which is in high-rise buildings.

The following are five of the office high-rise projects that are tentatively scheduled to be completed in the next two to three years.

Symphony Towers On the block bounded by 7th and 8th avenues and A and B streets.

A $143.5-million complex that includes a 34-story office tower, which will make it the city’s tallest building, and a 24-story hotel. Located on the site of Symphony Hall, which will be retained, the office building will have 620,000 square feet of gross leaseable office space.

Developers: Charlton Raynd Development Co.

Construction starts this week. Completion scheduled for late fall, 1988.

Koll Center 4th Avenue and Broadway.

A $200-million project of two office towers, with a combined 700,000 square feet; a 335-room high-rise hotel and about 30 residential units. The first 20-story office tower, with about 300,000 square feet, already has one preleased tenant, the law firm of Jennings Engstrand & Henrikson.

Construction of the first phase is slated to begin next spring.

Completion is scheduled for early 1989.

Shapery Emerald Center Columbia Street and Broadway.

A $115-million project with a 30-story, 375,000-square-foot office building and a 29-story, 497-room hotel.

Ground breaking is scheduled for next summer.

Completion expected in early 1989.

Cabot, Cabot & Forbes Columbia and C streets.

A $65-million, 19-story office building with 360,000 square feet. Developers hope to start construction next year and open for business in early 1989.

Trammell Crow Co. On a block bounded by B and C streets and 8th and 9th avenues.

A $100-million, 26-story office building tentatively called Financial Gateway.

Construction on the 500,000-square-foot edifice is tentatively set to begin next year.

Completion planned for sometime in 1989.
