A group of ministers called for a boycott of major businesses in a New Orleans suburb unless the sheriff there resigns for threatening to stop and question blacks seen in affluent white neighborhoods. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee dropped the plan less than 24 hours after announcing it last week amid a groundswell of protest. The West Bank United Ministers, an organization that claims to represent 5,000 church members, threatened the boycott if Lee does not resign by Tuesday. In what he described as an intensified campaign to fight rising crime, Lee had authorized additional patrols during the holidays for residential and commercial sections of Jefferson Parish.
