Alcohol consumption will be banned in Mt. Diablo State Park as of Jan. 1, making the 15,000-acre recreation area the first California state park in which drinking is not allowed. State park system spokesman Larry Paynter said large drunken parties have long been a problem in the Contra Costa County park that has 500,000 visitors a year and narrow, winding roads making drinking especially dangerous. He noted that many teenagers in Danville go to Mt. Diablo to drink, leading to an increase in the number of traffic accidents.
