More than 7 million Cubans took part in a military exercise to prepare for a possible attack by the United States, the Cuban news agency Prensa Latina reported. The agency said the Revolutionary Armed Forces and its reserves, plus 1.5 million people in militia, defense production brigades and special combat units took part in the exercise, called “Bastion ’86.” It said that since the Reagan Administration took office, “Cuba has made a greater effort in its preparation in light of a possible foreign attack before the mounting hostility from our powerful neighbor.”
